In 945 C.E, a Slavic tribe stopped paying tribute to the Grand Prince of Kievan Rus, Igor I. When he went to collect, they brutally murdered him.
Emboldened by the victory, the tribe's prince sent 20 noblemen to Kyiv to extend his hand in marriage to Igor's widow, Olga.
According to one chronicle, when they arrived, Olga received them warmly and told them, "Your proposal is pleasing to me, indeed, my husband cannot rise again from the dead. But I desire to honor you tomorrow in the presence of my people."
The next day, Olga sent her soldiers to lift up the noblemen's boat and carry them in it through the city directly into her court.
But once they arrived, the soldiers threw all 20 of them into a deep pit and buried them alive — while Olga looked down on them to ask if they "found the honor to their taste." And that was just the beginning of her revenge.
