What I find surprising is that aren't children naturally curious? I mean, there's a very strong evolutionary incentive for curiousity in the young, and I'm not one of those "our psychology is all evolved" people.
What's going on that significant swathes of an upcoming generation have little to no what should be natural curiousity?
And I'm not on board with the "it's all just the school system". This is clearly something that reaches across systems, and it also never was such a problem in previous generations who went through the same systems.
