japan has a very instructional culture, I noticed. I like this. Restaurants often present a recommended way of eating their food. In europe, I've been at restaurants several times where I didn't know what to do with certain served things. In japan they will tell you what they recommend you to do. You can then of course choose to ignore that if you have a better idea (I eat my yakisoba with okonomi sauce and you can't stop me)
