What a beautiful piece of š Skolithos linearis I encountered! These are Cambrian trace fossils more than half a billion years old (among the oldest trace fossils in Europe). The ice age brought them down from Scandinavia to Germany. They're not actually very rare at all, it's just that most people don't think much of it (most pieces are much less conspicuous). Just look at how densely packed these presumed burrows into sediment at the dawn of macroscopic life are! I never get tired of them.
