I remember when I first started teaching in the late 1980s. I found out about a teenaged girl whose younger sibling was in the class next door. Her brother talked about her having extra money and treats such as sweets. It emerged that an elderly man who lived on the route she took to school had been giving her gifts in exchange for sexual acts.
These predators are everywhere.
Thankfully this was flagged and she was safe, but he was only cautioned. Who knows if he had a network.
In the early 2000s I was supporting a girl aged about 9 who had been raped by a local teenaged boy. The police and local authority did nothing, so her family were still living near him. She saw him most days on her way home from school.
The lack of interest in protecting girls is shocking. but not surprising.
