Those of us not in actual poverty live better lives than any king before maybe a hundred years ago. And plenty of people with a Hugo award on the shelf *do* live in actual poverty, starting but not ending with Fritz Leiber, who ended his life typing on a portable typewriter, on his lap, because there was no space in his small room for a desk.
