I think he's protecting the oligarchs who fund all the politicians to some degree.

We have aristocrats/oligarchs whom the politicians serve and peasants whom the politicians must subjugate.

Republicans think peasants must be brutalized.
Democrats think peasents must be gently subjugated.

They don't disagree as much about the subjugation part. To really be free, we must end the oligarchs.
