JULIUS CEASAR CROSSING THE RUBICON:
"I came to Ravenna, where I found the legion which I had brought from Cisalpine Gaul. When I had been informed that my enemies were seizing upon Italy with armed bands, I thought that I ought not to delay. Accordingly, I led forth the legion which was with me from Ravenna and marched to Ariminum.
The river Rubicon forms the boundary of Italy. Hitherto I had hesitated, reflecting upon the magnitude of the crime of crossing it; but inflamed by the injuries which had been done me and goaded on by the insolence of my opponents, I crossed the river, which is the boundary of Italy, and advanced with one legion."
This passage is significant because it marked the beginning of Caesar's civil war against Pompey and the Roman Senate. It's a firsthand account of a pivotal moment in Roman history, written by the man who initiated it.
