I periodically rail against "wait for online" boot steps, on the basis that "onlineness" is a meaninglessly vague term and all those steps serve to do is slow down boot and make race conditions from badly written software less frequent/harder to diagnose.
In other news, my Fedora system takes 12s to get from start of userspace to a desktop, and 8s of that is networkmanager "waiting for online" and holding up the entire boot process. This computer is on ethernet, network configuration takes milliseconds. But oh no, my definition of online doesn't agree with whatever NetworkManager or someone on its bug tracker insisted it should be, and so it halts everything for an eternity waiting for fuck knows what. grrr.
