In the immediate aftermath of WWII UK debt was around 250% of GDP and the Attlee Labour government created the NHS, set up the welfare state, invested huge amounts in infrastructure projects and built millions of social houses.
Now, debt is about 100% of GDP and Starmer's Labour says there's no money to do anything worthwhile and that they must, effectively, continue with the austerity policies of the previous Tory administration.
