Nostr clients and relays can evolve in lots of different ways, what’s neat is that without a network-effect moat there is a genuine open market for the best solutions to gain adoption. Importantly all users are different some want simple, some want advanced. Different people have different use cases and probably value different features. Clients should know their target audience and build for them. One thing I wonder is should clients have built in proprietary features / service or should they have selectable micro services? We are probably going to see both, although it’s probably still too early for micro services to start targeting 1 thing to do extremely well for all clients. What might the first micro services try to do?
#1 people, 👩🏽🦳👨🦰how do you discover new people or look up people you know? Different individuals are interested in different kinds of people, is there even a 1 size fits all solution or should this be a selectable 3rd party service? Lots of ways to navigate discovery but probably different people want different things.
#2 content, 📰📝how should content discovery work? Should it be by follows? By reactions? By chronology? Should clients use proprietary algorithms? Should clients offer sockets for 3rd party algorithms to sample and curate global? How do we think the market will demand this is done?
#3 media, 🎬🎤again how do you discover media? Do you do it via people you follow/know or should you discover media on its own merit? Lots of different ways to do this should a client use a proprietary built in method or a third party service that users can select from a market of options?
#4 reactions, 🫶👍❤️🤙💋🔥there can be many kinds of reactions, how should clients handle them should there be a distinction between them or are they fungible? What services could be built on reactions? Maybe someone could implement a sign ✍️ reaction that uses your key to give consent for something?
#5 money, ⚡️ the lightning network is a game changer on nostr, it’s fairly easy to host both an LN node and a nostr relay on the same VM or hardware instance. It should be OBVIOUS to everyone that this can give rise to a bankless economy which is profoundly gamechanging for many people. Suddenly they can financialise and capitalise ventures and opportunities where no option to do so has ever existed previously. With pools of liquidity there might be other innovations in the future such as insurance underwriting that allow a square return for providing liquidity without the need for lending in an expanding debt-based money supply.
There are myriad directions for innovation, media consumption, marketing, retail, finance, productivity, socialising, lots of things seem quite likely to spring up on nostr in the near future.
