While I consider myself to be a fairly “radical” personal privacy and security absolutist it is always important to look at these things in realistic terms.
Personal politics aside I always emphasize one very important thing to people:
All security is relative to the value of what you are aiming to secure.
Are you Bin Laden, or are you sitting on a literal wealth of information or assets? Or are you just a common citizen of no particular significance compared to your neighbor?
Does your email contain nuclear codes and state secrets? Or Groupons, Amazon reciepts for impulse purchases, and chain emails from your crazy uncle?
People often want to exaggerate the value and significance of what is otherwise the same common and uninteresting life as the next person.
Every technical professional can attest to their non-technical friends, family, and associates have at one time or another been asked the silly (and borderline offensive) question: “could you ‘hack’ into my [email/social media account]?”
To which I have learned to always give the same response: “buddy, I barely read my own email. What in the world is so special about you that I would I want to waste my time reading yours?” 🙄
