But no, I don't think the self-hosting is trivial, and you will always need to interact with some kind of phone company to actually obtain a phone number. Asterisk is typically involved too, and is generally a pain.

It's easy to forget how good we have it in XMPP compared to other protocol ecosystems 🙂
