When he piloted the spaceship, he was the spaceship. It was an extension of his body and he knew where it fit in the world.
Except when you have a rough night or two.
Then you get clumsy.
He should have let his partner pilot. Sure she was nervous about the obstacles along the way. But she was fresh, clear headed.
Spaceship collision insurance isn't cheap. He'd be paying a big premium now.
