USGS now identifies this morning's New Jersey #earthquake (now reported at 4.8 magnitude) as "the potential mainshock of an earthquake sequence". The first in the sequence was observed to be very close to this one, and occurred on March 14 with magnitude 2.2, too small for most people to notice.
The USGS information page also gives nearly a 50-50 chance of an aftershock of at least 3.0 magnitude within the next week:
