Three years ago my mom died, peacefully, at 96. She was complicated and kind, critical and fiercely loyal. She stopped talking to me when I first came out - and later apologized and became a fierce supporter of gay rights. She was a conservative born again Christian who drove Muslim women in Beirut to get abortions so they wouldn't be a victim of an honor killing, and voted pro choice every time she had the opportunity.
This is a favorite picture of her with my nephew.
