It was never about the functionality. Apple designed iMessage to be a pain point for families, so parents wouldn't buy less expensive phones for their kids.
It's exhausting that people still keep acting like Apple was out to make the best functional product for their customers.
It was always about lock in, and they found a GREAT psychological pain point to encourage their customers to evangelize against Android users.
It's "in group" vs "out group" marketing at its finest.
