1ST: Our media gives a platform to & both-sides every stupid "expression" instead of helping us get to the highest consensus. 2ND: As you suggested, government is likewise broken when it has lost the ability to deliberate & turn sober consensus onto effective policy/action.
Result: Collective apathy is collective consent to be ruled only by people with power & who don't give a damn about trifles like the consensus, morality or the future.
Still, we need to keep the pilot light of speech going even as we work to fix the broken furnace of our institutions.
