huh so if you use mastodon.el with a non-masto server, grouped notifs might break your shit. sorry.
i spent some time today re-implementing v1 (non-grouped) notifs for yous. mastodon.el aims to be minimally mastodon-centric, so it's a priority. grouped notifs will be on by default, but off-able with a defcustom. seems to work ok so far.
coming to a develop branch near you.
