I’ve never had to seriously consider what it would be like if I couldn’t safely live in the United States anymore. It’s a privilege to be certain. My family left Eastern Europe in mostly good order, not fleeing violence but economic and social oppression. We got out largely before the Nazis. In the back of my mind, I’d wondered: am I another generation who gets a pass to stay?
