As a human we have this innate desire to consume information from all facets of life. It’s how we learn, we have to have an input from the time that we’re babies to learn how to eat, walk, talk, etc. but the overload of consumption that we now exist in is insane now man. Think about it, you and I both consumed more information through computers and tv by the time we were like 8-9 years old than all of the rest of humans throughout all of history consumed in their entire lives. Creativity does require consumption, you have to be inspired in order to begin to make something new. I’m not arguing that creativity isn’t derivative of what’s come before, it definitely is. But if the internet went down tonight, I’m pretty sure beautiful new music would still get written, amazing new movies developed (on film), new novels as grand as The Lord of The Rings would still be written. Most ppl (myself included) fall into the trap day after day of believing that they need more consumption in order to be inspired. That notion is false. Prove-ably false. The Red Hot Chili Peppers didn’t need to spend hours a day on YouTube to be inspired to write Californication. Our generation could turn off everything digital and go do our own stuff tomorrow and we’d come up with incredible works of art, innovation in physics, engineering, you name it. We don’t need more consumption or entertainment. Hopefully our timeline will reach the point where we realize the futility of trying to entertain ourselves.
