Named after Johannes Diderik van der Waals, the van der Waals forces are relatively weak attractive electric forces that exist between neutral molecules in some liquefied and solidified gases and in almost all organic liquids and solids. Usually, the solids held together by van der Waals forces have lower melting points and are softer than those held together by the stronger ionic, covalent, and metallic bonds. In addition, the van der Waals force is a distance-dependent force and quickly vanishes at larger distances between interacting molecules.
