Preparing your smartphone for a protest: put it on the charger at home. Leave it there. Go to the protest. That's my advice. Maybe have a cheap folding phone with removable battery on you. That you only switch on in case of real urgency or when you are far away from the protest. That you have just factory reset before stepping out.
