the whole inbox/outbox model and relay hints is all a bit nebulous, as recent events have shown, there is still no decent standard for authentication, but i can say that nostrudel and coracle both seem to work well with my relay's auth, which is pretty much one of the best relay auth implementations (and it's basically identical to the ones that fiatjaf and mattn have made and written clients for)
