It’s been a decade since gravimetric cannon went out of fashion. It doesn’t hardly feel that long, for me, and I calculate it’s about twenty one months for you. When the house of cards that was Interstellar Inc collapsed, there wasn’t even the money, nor the will, to run the deceleration loops long enough to catch inbound vessels. Twenty four freighters, counting yours, sped right past Earth and kept going at cruising speed, upwind of 90 percent cee. The oligarchs who bled Interstellar dry to pump their asteroid holdings expected to get away with it. The courtroom battle took longer than anyone expected, but finally sentences were handed down, and critically, assets were nationalized. Most of us at Intersellar Rescue Consortium, lessee of the sole functioning Lunar Orbital Cannon, are—like me—family and lovers of lost starfarers. Sailors on a different sea used to say a stern chase is a long chase, it was ever and forever thus, but we’re coming to get you. We’ll have plenty of time on the way to work out how to get home; I’ve got some ideas.
