npub1au3pj026cf8vsn6nx3x7264clm6u60vzly674atcqnmrwyps8psslzh972 (npub1au3…h972) the level of "shame" to be felt is obviously different. Of course people will have to use MacOS/iOS/Windows for work or other external reasons. But my point has always been that people *shouldn't* use these products when they have a choice.

The reason why these companies have so much leverage is their humongous user base. They know that they can get away with almost everything, including covering the whole start menu with ads maybe, and their numbers won't fall anyway. They know that they can behave like jerks, explicitly build exploitative policies around their stores or drop support for features overnight, and still they may not lose a single user. Some people may be mad at them, but probably not many (if any) would react to such news by suddenly switching to Linux.

That's the root of the problem. If they user base wasn't so inelastic, they wouldn't have so much power, they wouldn't be able to bend elected governments at their own will amid threats of pulling out of countries, they wouldn't have so much room for enshittification.

Alternatives exist, they are often much better than the original products, and I'd like more people to walk away from these companies if they're really outraged at their actions.
