Band Aid's "Do they know it's Christmas" turned 40 this past November.
There was a huge famine in Ethiopia and Bob Geldof managed to get artists and their record companies to agree to do this to raise money. (US artists declined, but eventiually did "we are the world") This was followed by Live Aid on July 13 1985 which was a true "global village" event with a world broadcast of a concert held on different continents.
