In the last video, we introduced Dr. Bredesen’s first book, published in 2017: The End of Alzheimer’s: The First Program to Prevent and Reverse Cognitive Decline.

At the time of the book’s release, my aunt, Sandra, had just passed away at the age of 57 from early-onset Alzheimer’s and my father was close to being diagnosed. This book was an extremely valuable resource for my family and became our early playbook.

The first key area of the book focuses on really understanding what Alzheimer’s Disease really is and why past attempts at a “cure” have failed. Since the 1980’s the Amyloid Theory has been used as the foundational premise for all attempted therapies. Under this premise, it is Amyloid that is the cause of Alzheimer’s: that it’s the accumulation in the brain of these sticky communication-destroying plaques made of proteins called amyloid-beta that is damaging the brain and inducing the cognitive decline.

Past attempts at cures have tried to target amyloid with the hypothesis that if a drug could prevent amyloid from being formed or could remove it from the brain, the patient would get better. Patients didn’t get better and in many cases they got worse.

Dr. Bredesen’s team took a different approach: it was undeniable that the over-accumulation of amyloid was damaging the brain, severing connections and reducing cognitive function. But Dr. Bredesen went a step further and asked the question: WHY, why was the amyloid being produced in the first place?

Like peeling layers of an onion, Dr. Bredesen went a level deeper and gained a better understanding of what was really going on. This is what they found:

The body was producing amyloid on purpose because it was actually part of a protective response. So the brain would purposely start a downsizing program to reduce the network of connections between neurons so that it could start defending itself. Defend itself from what? Part of it’s defense mechanism was the production of amyloid, which has been found to have anti-bacterial and toxin-binding properties. More on that in future videos. The very amyloid that everyone was trying to get rid of for decades was actually part of the brain’s innate protective response to specifically three classes of threats:

1. Inflammation (from infection, diet, or other causes)
2. Decline and shortage of necessary nutrients, hormones and brain-supportive compounds
3. Toxic Exposures like heavy metals, chemical toxins or biological toxins produced by bacterial, fungal, parasitic and/or viral infections.

To get patients better, Bredesen simply decided to identify which of the contributors to these classes of threats a patient’s brain was responding to, square them up, treat and remove them so the brain could start to heal.

Hope this is helpful for you and your family. Thank you for watching!
