I also agree that (maybe even to a large part) this intense focus on black boxing and false simplifications is the direct result of too much White Boxing, but I think the pendulum has swung too far... Or, maybe it's just a sign of the times, since in some way you could also consider this a type of authoritarian design approach, one which explicitly denies interactions/control...
I didn't want to make my OP even longer, but another aspect I wanted to briefly mention here: The overall propagation of technological complexity is somewhat also the result of intense competition at cost of large scale collaboration (forced by the prevailing socioeconomic system).
Maybe in this new political landscape more of us have more incentives to actively participate in changing this...
