reading "A Mathematician’s Lament" (the original essay not the book) and while he is completely correct about mandatory math education in schools he seems very off about mandatory art education in schools. it's kind of funny for me that a mathematician didn't take the induction step to understand that all of his arguments apply to mandatory education as a whole and that if he tried to apply his "actually doing math" ideas as an obligatory curriculum in authoritarian schools, it would soon be reduced to some empty husk all over again.
