modern american christianity is just a collection of fanfiction loosely based on the bible now. a two millennia long game of telephone will do that, but it's more so colored by the personal beliefs of those they consider leaders of the faith that perverts the original teachings. see: megachurches, pentecostals, quiverfulls, the amish, catholic catechisms (to a lesser extent as these are essentially the religious equivalent of infrastructure), and of course the WBC.
