I've worked with good salesmen. Bad salesmen push shit you don't need. They can make a quick sale through slight of hand. This works in the immediate (or possibly indefinitely if the market is sizable enough) but you won't have repeat sales.

A good salesmen anticipates what can improve the client's situation and sets up a mutually beneficial exchange.

I assume you already know this but it's just something I've learned to spot in business.

I work in software contracting and I've always benefiting by partnering with someone who can set up business deals without pissing the clients off or alienating them. Repeat business is valuable. Someone good at this leaves me free to do the actual work.
