By civilization, I mean minimal grain production and distribution. The first written words in our civilization was for tracking jars of pig fat, if I remember right. As for systems growing ever bigger, folks like Buckminster Fuller and Donella Meadows (and even Eric Cline for history) could have helped us attain a more sustainable system(s). Likely FUBAR, but it didn't have to be necessarily so.
