Very few movies really need a sequel, much less a trilogy (or more). The nanosecond that all of the original core actors are no longer available (or can only be recreated via computers) OR the culture has shifted away from whatever it was that made the first one popular, all future stories should probably be canned and never released.
No movie needs a reboot/reset/retelling. Nostalgia and "fan service" will only get you so far, and honestly doesn't add any value.
A few examples off the top of my head: The Matrix, The Terminator, Beverly Hills Cop, RoboCop, Death Race, The Transporter, Die Hard, Nightmare on Elm Street, Iron Man, and (as much as I personally hate to admit it) The Fast & The Furious.
I shall die on this hill.
