Something that I suspect may not fully translate from American movies & TV to people in places with universal healthcare is that if characters are portrayed as working class, injury & illness are financial catastrophes on top of whatever else they cause.
If someone gets beaten up and has to go to the hospital, then that is a double whammy: the pain & injury + how expensive it is to be injured.
