I have timed our visit to avoid 16th June 1851, a day when the Great Exhibition saw 63,769 visitors.
For the most part, it was a day like any other - peaceful and orderly.
However, well-known balloonists Mr and Mrs Graham took off from Batty's Hippodrome in Kensington, in their hot air balloon.
They lost control of the balloon after hitting a lamp post, and drifted perilously near to Crystal Palace.
No panic ensued, however, and they had the good grace to crash elsewhere.
