Over the course of my 50+ years, I've seen an explosion of self storage places. There are times when these can be useful. Things like moving, remodeling, etc.
However, I think the growth of these places exceeds those needs.
I think there is a sickness in Americans. They can't let shit go. Rent a unit and fill it full of shit. How many garages do you see that are crammed floor to ceiling with boxes? Utility buildings?
