There are a few ways of looking at this:
1. Price controls do SOMETIMES work. Captive markets are one example of this, same with liability.
2. If you can't trust your government to not try to fuck you over then you're already living under an occupation regime so you can't really expect anything to work that well.
You Brits should execute your king for dereliction of duty.
