Don't want to celebrate victory prematurely (again), but the new O-ring and silicone grease seems to have done the trick: no more vigorous spraying at the pit adapter inside the well.
Someone mentioned it in another thread, but had I contacted a plumber I'm sure I would have been told "your pump is dead" and been out $3k.
Excluding labor, total cost of the repair was ~$12.
