In the menu bar, drop down the Input menu and select Show Keyboard Viewer. Hold down the option key, and you’ll see what it does to every key.
If you don’t have the Input menu, you simply need to go to Keyboard in System Settings and click the Edit button against Input Sources under Text Input.
(I use a US keyboard but assign the British keyboard layout to it, sometimes switching; I often need a polytonic Greek keyboard, and ABC – Extended gives access to a lot of useful diacritics, so I’ve been using this menu for ages.)
