*Why does water take so long to return to our taps?*

To understand the updates we are receiving, here is an explanation of the different parts

At Vereniging, Rand Water has the Zuikerbosch Treatment plant where most of our water is treated.
From Zuikerbosch, the water is transported through two 2.1m pipes to Vosloorus to the Mapleton Pumping station. There the water is Treated again and then pumped to the Vlakfontein Reservoirs in Benoni, also through 2.1m pipes.

Mapleton supplies the municipalities of Tshwane, Ekurhuleni, and smaller places like Secunda, Delmas, Bethal, etc.

Our water is pumped from Vlakfontein to Mooikloof Reservoir, the Woodlands Mall Bulk Meter and other reservoirs
Vlakfontein feeds more than 30 reservoirs in Tshwane.

*The work is completed. Why do we not have water ?*

To do the work at Mapleton, the lines from Zuikerbosch has to be drained up. The first step is to fill them up: 2.1m pipes over several km.

They then start the pumps to pump to Vlakfontein. Once again the pipes are big and stretch many km and have to be filled. Vlakfontein has a combined capacity of 600 Ml and must be 35% full before they will start forwarding the water.

Once Vlakfontein has sufficient water, they will start pumping to Mooikloof and other reservoirs. Once again the pipes have to be filled first before water is pumped into the reservoir, as Mooikloof is a high lying Reservoir the booster pump station at the Wilds assist to puch water to the reservoir, but the booster pumps can only be started when the pressure in the pipes from Vlakfontein reach 5 bar.

As water is released into the system from Mooikloof the low-lying areas will get water first.
