A couple of interesting cookbooks on the horizon.

Recipe writing has become so precise - weighing eggs, weights of ingredients (even water), weights not rounded to the nearest 5g, Lordy, some times I feel like a chemist in the kitchen. I was even reading today so many comments on a recipe complaining it used a "glug" of oil, and the dish burnt with the glug size that they used. (couldn't you see or smell it burning? I ask. Or don't you have a feel for how much oil it takes in that particular pan to stop it burning?)

I look at the recipes of my mother and grandmotther. A list of ingredients, the measures in handfuls or cups or missing altogether. Instructions like "Mix. Bake 200 degrees 30 mins." Sometimes there are no instructions, just a list of ingredients. And not one of the recipes has a picture to go with it.

I often muse while I am cooking..... will the recipe pendulum swing the other way... will precision give way to creativity and play in the kitchen again. And the big question.... will it take a cookbook to teach us how to do that ❓

I have no idea what these cookbooks are about, and whether they move the pendulum a little. But here's hoping. And at the least they inspired this little piece of musing....
