Actually there’s a two-for-one benefit from these schemes, with modest thermoelectric generation from the constant temp differential between deep and shallow, plus the gravity storage in the shaft.
If you added turbines on the surface, you could probably keep the local area self-sufficient in electric and reduce Grid edge demand.
