There are some people who have taken the centralising philosophy of modern statism as a confirmation of the irrelevancy of awqaf as an institution in the modern era. Is it true that there may be issues with it as a model for welfare? In comparison to the welfare state? Perhaps. But they were always primarily visualised as ways of securing the perpetual independence of the scholars from financial pressure and influence, this is their value. That is what needs to be focused on. It is a fact that cryptocurrencies can be a central factor in this. It also needs to be understood that awqaf aren't and were never mere land grants but often productive and included actual management. There are short works written by scholars on agricultural methods that they witnessed and learnt from farmers and other sources. I'd imagine the modern equivalent would be a scholar penning down a few thoughts on manufacturing.
