Some people identify with a gender or multiple genders strongly, and that identity is tightly coupled with their sense of self and identity. Others are only lightly attached to a gender, switch genders frequently, or not attached to any gender at all. All of these are completely reasonable ways to experience gender.
It's no more appropriate to tell a person who strongly identifies with a gender "we should abolish gender" as it is to tell someone who doesn't identify with a gender "you must choose a gender".
Different people are different, and that's okay.
