Interesting. 8% of internet users are responsible for 85% of ad clicks. I bet the numbers are even worse when you control for well targeted, germane ads on specialty sites (like a utility knife ad on a prepper forum).
I get the feeling that the ad-driven model collapsed because they tried to squeeze blood from lemons. It was fine back in the day when Google Ads meant a couple of modest text ads on the sidebar of a website, and usually targeted towards the nature of the site. Those ads were a reasonable cost and likely brought in reasonable customers. Now it's just billion-dollar companies spamming their 2x volume ALL EXCITEMENT ALL THE TIME WOW!!! video ads for any random shit in the middle of your math tutorial video. That shit might have worked on Boomers sitting around watching their IdiotTubes, but the internet is not a TV and Millennials and younger (in general) grew to hate TV-style commercials. So the effectiveness of the ads has decreased, and viewer tolerance of the ads has decreased, but ad vendors have inflated their payroll with useless employees and Wall Street will settle for nothing less than infinite exponential growth.
The idea of ad-based internet companies can still work fine. The problem is that all of the actual people involved in actual companies right now are narrow-minded greedy retards who would starve to death when faced with a basic monkey trap.
