it's true, the main form of alcohol prior to that dating back some 5000 years or so is fermented grains, aka "beer"
distillation was discovered some time around 1200 in Bulgaria, but i don't think that fruit wines were a big thing, plums are quite sugary, but as a base material for alcohol they are best distilled, you don't see fruit wines very much, almost none of them are ok without a boost of dextrose, and that has to come from, mostly, wheat, grapes are the exception to this
