On this day, four years ago, my mother died. Isolated in the retirement community with conversations on her pain disjointed and insufficient, she wound up in emergency surgery and died. I understand the urge to blame COVID on something other than a new virus that took humanity into a storm we were't equipped to handle. To blame conspiracies and government overreach and infringement of freedoms. That's deflection, a desire to be in control. COVID was a chaotic, deadly plague, and Mother died.
