Thinking a lot about that code reading tool. I have a hard time wording this but one of the things I realize is that "mental exercises" that are sometimes suggested I think are of questionable impact unless you are doing them directly on the material you are supposed to be studying.
As in, if you do a mental exercise on some unrelated material, that might give you a tool for understanding it on the target material you care about, but practicing that exercise in general doesn't necessarily make it any easier when you go to apply it to your real life work.
I guess the conclusion that I draw from that would be that the mechanics or steps of the exercise itself could be tool assisted without risk of atrophy since there isn't much to atrophy in the first place.
I think your ability to do such things is largely dependent on your working memory capacity, which there does not seem to be any way to improve.
