Maybe there’s a disconnect in the way we see the solution space here:
- Images are different than text. Having text easily copied across many relays is a good thing, it’s very rare that text can be “illegal” so there is less risk of it being a target of feds
- Having a nostr-images protocol has many complicated legal issues and storing images on nostr relays is a potential disaster. Once people start uploading illegal stuff (CP, etc), it will get ugly fast.
- No-one says it has to be a singular 3rd party image host, clients should have a way to configure any uploader that you would like. I will eventually have an option so you can just rsync files to your own server.
- Uploading to N relays takes a lot of bandwidth, most of the time people are happy with 1 upload, but clients could cycle between different hosts if centrality is a concern.
You don’t need to use the nostr model for everything. Nostr works great for text, not so much filesharing and media. We should leverage the web or build/utilize other protocols that are better for that.
